Parking is a free lot with street overflow, so getting a dog in and out is easy. There is no patio listed, so plan on an order and a walk rather than a long sit, and ask staff where they prefer the dog to wait.

The Circular Rock Path is not a park at all. It is a large maze and rock circle laid out in loose stones on a dry lakebed off Fairview Valley Road, with a meditative center that visitors have left small tokens in. It looks like a quick walk and turns out not to be, which is the point.

For a dog it is open ground with almost nobody around, and one reviewer noted their dog was able to run freely. GPS gets confused on the way in, so follow the road signs rather than the pin. There is no water or shade, so this is a cool-morning stop. Keep the dog out of the rock rings themselves; it is a community art piece.

Civic Center Dog Park on Dale Evans Parkway is the best-rated dog park in the High Desert, and reviewers who have tried the others say so directly. It has separate small and large areas, with three benches and a few trees on the small side and several benches under shade trees on the large side. Waste bags are kept stocked, and the regulars are described as respectful.

It sits inside the larger Civic Center Park, so there is a walking path around the grounds for a cool-down lap afterward. Dogs under about 25 pounds use the small side. Early mornings draw the same crowd every day, so a first visit is easier mid-morning or later.

The Pacific Crest Trail access off Apple Valley's east side is the quiet, long-distance option. The section here runs toward Deep Creek, with hot springs and swimming pools along the way and long views the moment you step out of the car. Reviewers describe it as peaceful and serene, a real break from town.

Go early, take more water than you think you need, and plan the turnaround before you start; this trail keeps going. There is no shade to speak of, so it is a spring, fall and winter hike with a dog. Through-hikers pass this way in season, and a well-behaved dog on a leash is the courtesy.

Horsemen's Center Park on Highway 18 is rocky hills, hiking trails, a small playground and a campground, popular with families, rock climbers and equestrians. For a dog it is a real walk over uneven ground with something to sniff at every turn, and a reviewer who has come here for thirty years still calls it a favorite.

The gate closes at dark, not at the posted time, and they will lock the lot with you in it. Bring water, gloves for the rocks and sunblock; there are no hookups or shade structures. Horses are common, so keep the leash short around the trailers.
